From a caterpillar to a butterfly

- What is God doing?
- What in the world is God doing on the earth?
He's doing it in a different way than all people suspect. He hides it because men don't want God. So, He does a unique thing. He's a heart knowing God! He can check our heart at any time.
We find a very unusual Scripture here in Matt. 20; this is quite a thing and it's hard for a lot of people to understand, but that's the way that God works.
Matthew 20:16: "So, the last shall be first, and the first shall be last… [what God is doing in the plan of salvation is the opposite of what men think] …for many are called, but few are chosen."
- How does God do that?
- How does He call?
- The Word goes out a lot, why a few chosen? Because few repent!
God takes those whom He calls, and if they answer the call and come to obey God, love God and want more, God is with them. The world doesn't know this operation that's going on. They don't know why God is doing what He's doing, because they really don't believe the Bible, yet, they use it. The answer is right there, and if they read it they can't understand it.
- If you're going to have a project to take over the world and run the world, what would you do on a human basis?
You'd get the best one in this field, and the best one in that field and you'd get all the experts together!
- Isn't that what the world has done?
- How is the world today?
God does the opposite, and yet, when you look at it, the people of God are the most important in the world. But that is conditional on loving God! So, let's see how God makes a choice. God is doing the exact opposite to take over the world. We need to look at it this way: All of us are in training to become the sons and daughters of God! To take over the world! That's what we're going to do after the resurrection! That's a mighty big job!
1-Corintians 1:18: "For to those who are perishing… [the people in the world] …the preaching of the cross is foolishness; but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. For it is written, 'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will nullify the understanding of those who understand.' Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Did not God make foolish the wisdom of this world?" (vs 18-20). Think about it, He has, hasn't He? Yes, indeed!
Verse 21: "For since in the wisdom of God the world through its own wisdom did not know God, it pleased God to save those who believe through the foolishness of preaching."
Think about it! If you brought in all the experts from whatever government you want and brought them into this room and say, 'These are the future leaders of the world.' They would say, 'You've got to be kidding!' They wouldn't believe it!
Verse 24: "But to those who are called—both Jews and Greeks—Christ is God's power and God's wisdom."
So, you're getting an education that starts, first of all, with character, which is the missing ingredient in government and education, and in every facet of the societies of this world.
Verse 25: "Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."
Here's how we are described by God, and we would be the last people in the world that those elite…
Sidebar on who are the elite: The elite are the many of the ones who run the whole world. In Rev. 3 that is called the synagogue of Satan! Why? Because they are running the governments by Satan's standard!
Everything about this world is being deceived evermore for the final finale!
Verse 26: "For you see your calling, brethren, that there are not many who are wise according to the flesh, not many who are powerful, not many who are highborn among you. Rather, God has chosen the foolish things of the world, so that He might put to shame those who are wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world so that He might put to shame the strong things. And the lowborn of the world, and the despised has God chosen—even the things that are counted as nothing—in order that He might bring to nothing the things that are" (vs 26-28). Completely opposite to the way that the world would do it!
- How does God train us?
- How does God teach us?
God has a secret that they don't know about, and that is described right here:
1-Corinthians 2:9: "But according as it is written, 'The eye has not seen, nor the ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.'" If you love Him, you will obey Him! John wrote:
1-John 5:3: "For this is the love of God: that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome."
The world thinks that anyone who would follow God is stupid. Have you read any of Hawkins' writings? He thinks that God is stupid, and anyone who would follow Him is crazy. Unfortunately, he had a handicap, he was one of the elite of the world. He died a wretched, miserable soul, but he thought he was some great one in the world, and the world thought he was, too.
This knowledge cannot be gotten without a special addition to each one of us, which only God can give! Let's see what that is:
1-Corinthians 2:10: "But God has revealed them to us by His Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things—eventhe deep things of God." It is the Holy Spirit of God!
Here's another operation that the world would look at as foolish: repent of sin! What is sin? Transgression of God's Law! 'Be baptized, put under the water, that's kind of stupid! Wouldn't you rather go to a university?'
You come up out of the water and have hands laid on you and receive the Holy Spirit of God. If you continue loving God and obey, you're going to understand what's in the Bible. That's an amazing thing! The greatest brains in the world can't understand it. God has chosen you!
Verse 11: "For who among men understands the things of man except by the spirit of man, which is in him? In the same way also, the things of God no one understands except by the Spirit of God."
We've all been here together, and we've been together before. You know how God's Spirit is with us and in us. God's Spirit works kind of like in parallel to the law of gravity. The law of gravity is holding everything on this earth, everything that thee is. When you walk along do you feel it? No! You can see it when you drop something, you can see the action. As long as you are in harmony with the law of gravity, everything is fine. When you're not, you fall down and bad things happen. That's just like it is with the Laws of God and the Spirit of God. The Spirit of God leads us! That's what we need. Notice the difference:
Verse 12: "Now, we have not received the spirit of the world…"
- What is "…the spirit of the world…"?
- Who sends that?
- Satan the devil, the prince of the power of the air (Eph. 1-3)!
Now he's got all the media, all the printing; he's got all these things, and here we are a complete contrary to the world. They think they know it all, and we know what God wants us to be. We don't know anything except as God reveals it to us through His Word.
"…but the Spirit that is of God, so that we might know the things graciously given to us by God; which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Holy Spirit in order to communicate spiritual things by spiritual means" (vs 12-13). That encompasses everything that God does:
- His commandments
- His laws
- His statutes
- His judgments
- faith
- hope
- love
He says that the key for all of this, 'because I'm doing a work in you and I'm going to give you something fantastic. You love Me with all your heart, mind, soul and being and your neighbor as yourself, and the brethren as Christ has loved us.' We love our enemies by praying that they stay far away.
Let's see what else God is doing. We are the few! Many are called, but few are chosen! He also does weeding our from time to time. Why is that? He wants us purified so that we don't have any of the worldly things in us! That's quite a thing! So, he's doing a tremendous and fantastic work in each one of us.
John 14 is one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible and tells us something very profound. Here's the key; this is the operation of how we grow in grace and knowledge. It's also a definition of the Spirit of God and how that works in us. Here's what Jesus said, and what is it that we start out with? The Ten Commandments!
John 14:21: "The one who has My commandments and is keeping them, that is the one who loves Me… [God reveals knowledge to those who love Him] …and the one who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will manifest Myself to him…. [this was a mystery to]: …Judas (not Iscariot)…" (vs 21-22)—because He just told them that He was going away.
- How are you going to reveal yourself if you're going away?
- How is that going to occur?
Verse 23: "Jesus answered and said to him, 'If…'" God does all of His operations with men and women based on choice; we're give a choice. Here it is:
"…'IF anyone loves Me, he will keep My Word; and My Father will love him, and We…" (v 23).
I emphasize this regularly because it's important. He doesn't say I or He, He says WE—Jesus and the Father:
"'…will come to him and make Our abode… [a dwelling place] …with him'" (v 23).
You have the Spirit of God dwelling in you! The Holy Spirit of God needs to be used and exercised. That's through prayer, study and keeping the Sabbath.
- What would you do if you didn't keep the Sabbath?
- How quickly would you fade away?
Real quickly because spiritual knowledge does not retain in the human brain without the Spirit of God. If you're not coming to God continually, that Spirit of God will gradually wane away.
Notice the comparison. He wanted to make it absolutely crystal clear so there would be no question.
Verse 24: "The one who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the Word that you hear is not Mine, but the Father's, Who sent Me." Think about that!
The book the world despises, rejects and wants to get rid of. People hate those who have the Bible, they want to get rid of them. In the Bible are all the teachings and everything we need to develop the character to finish the work of God.
God made this for every man, woman and child, that is true. But for us it has greater meaning. We are called the sons and daughters of God.
Psalm 8:1: "O LORD our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!…." There can't be any name greater than that! Remember Jesus and the Father are dwelling spiritually in us.
Verse 2: "Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings You have ordained strength because of Your adversaries, to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I consider Your heavens…" (vs 2-3). How many times have you gone out and looked up as the heavens?
"…the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him? For You have made him a little lower than God…" (vs 3-5).
Without the Spirit of God and rejection of the Spirit of God, those who go their own way, that's big trouble. God made us incomplete needing His Spirit and needing His Word. But we're made lower than God.
Verse 6: "You made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands…"—the whole earth!
Let's see what God is doing in us, and how He tells us in 1-John 3… Let me tell you a little bit about the Greek. There are two words for son:
- 'huios'
- 'teknos'—meaning, in this case, your very own begotten Son
Read this with that in mind; 1-John 3:1: "Behold! What glorious love the Father has given to us, that we should be called the children of God!…." From the verb 'tekna.' The KJV in Rom. 8 says 'adopted.' We're not adopted! We are His own sons and daughters by begettal of the Holy Spirit.
That's a fantastic thing, and quite a thing for us to really comprehend and work with. Sometimes you'll be doing things that you don't even know that God is leading you to do them until afterward you look back and see.
I explain this in a lesson on Rom. 8 about intercession and the Spirit of God, that God will lead you to say and do things that you look back and see that God had to do that for you!
When I did that I referred to my resignation in 1979—note sermon: Repentance and Resignation—there was one place in there… I didn't have any notes, nothing written down; I had a couple of articles and wrote down some Scriptures. I kept praying, 'O God, please don't let them take me down off the stage.'
I got to the point where I was talking about Pasadena, and I said, 'I hope someone is standing in the pulpit in Pasadena telling the people to amend their ways. Because if you don't, God is going to send the forces that are going to tear the Church asunder.'
I didn't know anything about those words until I spoke them! It could only be that God inspired it to be. So, all the credit goes to God! 'Who is this renegade preacher to stand up there on his own that God is going to destroy this big church.' Well he did in 15 years.
So likewise, when we have the Spirit of God He is leading and guiding us, and even working out circumstances that seem to be coincidences, but they're not coincidences. God is working it out. Why? Because we are the children of God and are to be born to a tremendous thing!
"…For this very reason, the world does not know us because it did not know Him. Beloved, now we are the children of God… [not yet born, but see what this says]: …and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be; but we know that when He is manifested, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him exactly as He is" (vs 1-2).
Why? Christ is all glorious! Here is what this inspiration is to do for us. It's called hope.
Verse 3: "And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, even as He is pure." That's the process of overcoming!
Let's see what it is that Peter says God is doing with us. This is astounding and the most important thing we need to understand.
2-Peter 1:1: "Simon Peter a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained the same precious faith as ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ." That's how everything is done!
- by Christ
- Christ in us
- God in us
- doing the things that God wants us to do
Verse 2: "Grace and peace be multiplied to you…" This is giving us spiritual strength, because living in this world we all face a lot of troubles and trials. Let this grace and peace be multiplied so you withstand and overcome all of these problems!
"…in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, according as His Divine power has given to us all things…" (vs 2-3).
Remember, all things not yet received! That's will take place at the resurrection.
"…that pertain to life and Godliness, through the knowledge of Him Who called us by His own glory and virtue" (v 3)
I gave a sermon a couple years ago about what's in a seed. You look at a little seed and if you don't have it in a packet or labeled, or you don't know what bush or tree or flower it came off of, you don't know what's in it. But you plant it and it grows. Look a the plants and the flowers. That's exactly what God has done with us. He's given us the seed of His begettal!
Verse 4: "Through which He has given to us the greatest and most precious promises…" Every one of us here has what the world cannot receive!
"…the greatest and the most precious promises…" When you understand and really know and believe that God cannot lie, that His Word is absolutely true, and everything that He has said in the past that He said He would do has been done. Everything that is going to be done in the future will be done!
So, powerful are those words, Jesus said that 'heaven and earth will pass away, but My words shall never pass away.' That's why we need the words of God.
"…that through these you may become partakers of the Divine nature…" (v 4). You won't have to fight that old carnal nature anymore! Think of that!
I saw a nice Go to Meeting that Steve Greene did about butterflies. The butterfly starts out as a nasty leaf-eating caterpillar. It may have some beauty to it, but it's yucky and you don't want it crawling on you. If you ever had it where there's been a caterpillar attack on a tree, you know what that's like.
All of sudden the caterpillar disappears and he goes and builds a chrysalis (pupa) around himself and goes to sleep. Remember, when saints die God calls it sleep.
The caterpillar is in there for how long a time? I don't know! Not very long, really! Then one day it starts moving and opens up the top and starts crawling out and, lo and behold, it's not a caterpillar, it's a butterfly! Complete change! Beautiful and it sits there and dries out its wings, and then it flies.
In that, we can learn a lesson of the resurrection. The nature of the caterpillar was changed from a caterpillar to a butterfly, but it was always intended to be a butterfly, because that's the way God made it.
We are also intended to be something different than we are. Most of our chrysalis will not be a chrysalis, but in a box called a coffin. One day we're all going to be raised. An angel is going to be there and say, 'Come with me.' Where are we going? 'We're going up to the Sea of Glass.' Who are you? 'I'm your angel.'
You will be changed, just like it says, 'in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.' That's going to be something! This is how God is going to create all of the righteous character of His government, of His kingdom that He's going to bring on the earth. We're all going to be changed.
1-Corinthians 15:51: "Behold, I show you a mystery…" It's a secret of God! Isn't it an amazing thing that all the religions of the world believe in some sort of spirit going to heaven? They're blinded! It's a secret, and they can't understand that!
Remember when Paul went to Mars Hill to speak to all the philosophers. He had to go in there and say, 'You like to worship various divine deities and I walked by and saw one to 'The Unknown God.' That's a good one to use because they think they're so smart. So, Paul said, 'I come to preach Him!' So, he preached Jesus Christ and the resurrection from the dead. If this God Who created the heavens and the earth and everything there is, in Him we all live, move and have our being.' Then he even quoted a poet that said that we are the children of God.
"…we shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed, in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed" (vs 51-52).
- all that flesh
- all that carnality
- all that weakness
- all that stupidity
Gone!
Verse 53: "For this corruptible must put on incorruptibility, and this mortal must put on immortality." That's the Divine nature!
Verse 54: "Now, when this corruptible shall have put on incorruptibility, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: 'Death is swallowed up in victory.' O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory?" (vs 54-55)—not there!
I think the resurrection is going to be such a fantastic thing that this world is going to go absolutely 'bananas'! They are going to go satanic insanity of a scale that we have never understood. We'll be out of the midst of it. But we have work to do.
What do we have to do to attain that? God has made us so that we can work, think and do all of these things as led by the Holy Spirit of God. But in order to develop that new body and mind that we're going to have, we have to do some things now with God's Spirit.
2-Peter 1:5: "And for this very reason also, having applied all diligence…" You can't lay back and be 'kool' and 'ho hum'; 'once saved always saved, it doesn't matter what you do; God loves you and God's love is unconditional.' NO! God's love is conditional!
"…besides, add to your faith, virtue; and to virtue… [good behavior] …knowledge; and to knowledge…" (vs 5-6). The knowledge of:
- God
- the Word of God
- the Sabbath
- the Holy Days
- the love of God
- the hope of God
- the grace of God
That is knowledge that we have and that's fantastic. That only comes because we yield ourselves to God and He uses us as instruments to do what is necessary to make it possible to teach the brethren. That's how He designed it.
"…and to knowledge, self-control…" (v 6).
You hear a lot of arguments about the government of God that you cannot enter into the Kingdom of God unless you learn how to be ruled by the ministry. That's not what God wants. He wants self-control with His Spirit! If you happen to slip up, repent. He's ready to forgive. He knows that it's a difficult work. That's why He is merciful, forgiving, and why He provides all of these things to us. Isn't that a fantastic thing? So we can become like God! Think of that!
That's amazing when you think that we start out like the book: From a Speck of Dust to the Son of God: Why Were You Born? Amazing thing!
"…and to self-control, endurance; and to endurance, Godliness" (v 6). Look at the standard! God gave us a high standard so that we can keep striving. If He gave us a low standard with nothing to do, what would happen? We'd all be carnal, sinful and wretched! So, He gives a high standard so that we develop His character.
Verse 7: "And to Godliness, brotherly love; and to brotherly love, the love of God…. [here is the promise]: …For if these things exist and abound in you… [with God's Spirit, since it's living these things are a part of our life] …they will cause you to be neither lacking effort nor lacking fruit in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ" (vs 7-8).
Dan. 12 says that 'at the time of the end many who are in the dust of the earth shall arise. Some to everlasting glory and some to everlasting contempt.' Those who are wise and turn many to righteousness shall shine as the stars, and the sun is a star.
Let's see what Jesus said about the resurrection; Matthew 13:43: "Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father…." That is astounding! What is that going to be like?
Remember what God told Moses when Moses said, 'Show me Your glory.' God said, 'No one can see My face and live.' What kind of power is God giving to us to see Him like He is? To shine like the sun! That is astounding!
Then Jesus says, because there is work to do, "…The one who has ears to hear, let him hear" (v 43).
John 17 is the real Lord's prayer. How John had this part given to him, I have no idea. When they went to the Garden of Gethsemane and Jesus went to pray, and He prayed three times, so much so that He knew everything was at stake, everything was hinging on that night.
What were the disciples doing? Sleeping! Jesus said, 'What, can't you stay awake an hour?' So, God had to give this John in a revelation, because no one was there taking notes. Here's Jesus on His knees; here's the time. I'll say this, there are three works to finish for Jesus:
- the preaching of the Gospel, which He says here is finished
- the crucifixion and resurrection
- when you get to Rev. 21 is done
Here's the first one:
John 17:1: "Jesus spoke these words, and lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, 'Father…'" Of course, the Father has been with Him all the time! They planned this and Jesus gave all the gruesome, prophetic details of the butchering He would go through at the crucifixion and scourging.
"…the hour has come; glorify Your own Son, so that Your Son may also glorify You; since You have given Him authority over all flesh…" (vs 1-2). That's going to be a surprise to a lot of people when they come up in the second resurrection!
"…in order that He may give eternal life to all whom You have given Him. For this is eternal life, that they may know You… [face-to-face] …the only true God…" (vs 2-3).
Why did He say "…the only true God…"? The one-God believers will say, 'See, there's only one God.' When Jesus was in the flesh He was God in the flesh, but He wasn't true God. The only One Who was the true God was the Father. After the resurrection Jesus was also true God.
"…and Jesus Christ, Whom You did send. I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work that You gave Me to do…. [that's the Gospel] …And now, Father… [just imagine these words; here He knows that the arrest is coming]: …glorify Me with Your own self, with the glory that I had with You before the world existed. I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world…." (vs 3-6).
All of you have been called out of the world. The Father draws you, Christ leads you to repentance and you are out of the world. You belong to the Father and are given to Christ. That's amazing!
"…They were Yours, and You have given them to Me, and they have kept Your Word" (v 6).
Remember the blessing to the Church at Philadelphia (Rev. 3): because you have kept the Word of My patience (or patiently kept My Word), I will make those of the synagogue of Satan—the elite who detest us, despise us, hate us and worship Satan; they're going to be humbled—and they're going to come before us and fall down before us and worship God in heaven before our feet!
Is that not fulfilling 1-Cor. 1? To take the weak and those who are nothing, to bring to nothing those who think they're something? Yes, indeed, there it is!
Verse 7: "Now, they have known that all things that You have given Me are from You. For I have given them the words that You gave to Me…" (vs 7-8).
Remember, Jesus said that 'I do nothing of My own self. As I see the Father do, as I hear the Father say, that's what I do!'
Verse 9: "…but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. All Mine are Yours, and all Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them" (vs 9-10).
Now comes the critical time. They need a special gift, the special Holy Spirit so they can do what He wants. He says:
Verse 9: "I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world, but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours. All Mine are Yours, and all Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. And I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name…" (vs 9-11).
Think of that! With the begettal of the Holy Spirit of the Father, you have the Father's name on you and in you!
"…those whom You have given Me, so that they may be one, even as We are one. When I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. I protected those whom You have given Me, and not one of them has perished except the son of perdition, in order that the Scriptures might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to You; and these things I am speaking while yet in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in them. I have given them Your words, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You would take them out of the world, but that You would keep them from the evil one" (vs 11-15)—showing that we have that same battle!
Verse 16: They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them… [to be set aside and made Holy] …in Your Truth…" (vs 16-17).
- every Word of God
- every commandment
- every precept of God
is Truth! That's how we are made Holy. How does God do that? He writes them on our mind and inscribes them on our heart!
"…Your Word is the Truth" (v 17).
Isn't it an amazing thing with this prayer, just before the most horrendous catastrophe to happen in the world? The death of Jesus Christ, though He gave His life willingly!
Verse 18: "Even as You did send Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify Myself… [He's the Head of the Church] …so that they also may be sanctified in Your Truth. I do not pray for these only, but also for those who shall believe in Me through their word" (vs 18-20). He was thinking right down to the end!
Verse 21: "That they all may be one…" This is the whole purpose and plan of God that all of us, all the brethren down through the ages. How great is it going to be?
"…even as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us…" (v 21). That's an amazing thing!
Don't ever be discouraged. If you get discouraged, go read this prayer of Jesus, He's praying for you! Everyone who believes through their word! That's us today!
"…in order that the world may believe that You did send Me…. [that will come later] …And I have given them the glory that You gave to Me… [the Holy Spirit, the full glory comes later] …in order that they may be one, in the same way that We are one!" (vs 21-22).
- What a goal!
- What a life!
- What a calling!
So great that the world can't understand it! With their stupid robots they think they're so powerful today. 'We have artificial intelligence and we're so great' and all of this. God is going to POOF! And it's all gone! He's going to give us the greatest and most precious promises: that we can receive the Divine nature, the nature of God! And live forever!
Remember, Jesus told the disciples, 'Your Father delights in giving you the Kingdom!' What a time that is going to be!
Verse 23: "I in them, and You in Me, that they may be perfected into one…" That's what God is doing, perfecting us!
We all may be getting older, because everyone of us have few more gray hairs or a few less hair, and we're getting old and we're going to pass from the scene just like it's happened before. But this is true. That's why in this life He wants us perfected.
"…and that the world may know that You did send Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me" (v 23). Think about that for a minute! How much does God love each one of us?
Brethren, we're the ones who are going to take over the world, and the world is going to be astonished!
