At the Capitol of the United States they have a Chaplin, and He gave a prayer before they started a conference. He read his message, and he ended his prayer by saying, 'In His name we pray.'
I've heard that a lot over the last number of years when I went to certain civic events and sometimes they would say a prayer and they all say, 'In His name we pray.'
Well, what name do you pray in? with a big question mark. I think they put a blank in there, and I think that's what they were doing so that you could put in 'Allah' if you wanted to, or whomever god you served. They wanted to make sure that that the Jews, who don't believe in Christ and accept Him and His name, that it would pacify them. That was a politically correct statement. They wanted to please everyone.
I don't know if you noticed it or not, but if you would, in the future, how many of these people in these civic or national events don't close in the name of Jesus Christ in their prayer, they just say 'in his name we pray.' Therefore they can satisfy everybody and can put in what god they serve.
We know that when we pray we ask 'in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!'
So, God is not happy with political correctness, and we shouldn't be either. We should also be a thing that we hate, when people don't use the name of Jesus Christ or they don't use it correctly.
We'll get into some Scriptures that talk about what we need to do in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Deuteronomy 6:13: "You shall fear the LORD your God and serve Him… [and Him only] …and shall swear by His name."
We know that Jesus Christ was sent to be our Savior and High Priest and soon coming King.
Verse 14: "You shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people who are all around you."
We live in a nation where there are all kind of gods now that they recognize—Allah, Buddha, all these different names—and the people accept them.
Verse 15: "For the LORD your God is a jealous God among you, lest the anger of the LORD your God be kindled against you and destroy you from off the face of the earth."
Unfortunately, just like ancient Israel they have people around them who serve other gods, and Israel started worshipping the gods of other nations as well.
We know Who we are to worship. Christ said that He came to reveal the Father and we worship the Father and also Jesus Christ, His Son, Whom the Father sent to become our Savior. He died in our stead so we can have eternal life. We need to give honor and glory to God by and through the name of Jesus Christ.
John 14:6: "Jesus said to him, 'I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life… [Truth and Life come from God] …no one comes to the Father except through Me.'" We have access to the Father by and through Jesus Christ!
Verse 13: "And whatever you shall ask in My name, this will I do that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it" (vs 12-14). It has to be according to certain stipulations:
Verse 14: "If you love Me, keep the commandments—namely, My commandments."
- we have to be keeping the commandments of God
- we have to be striving to obey Him
- we have to love Him
In order for God to hear us! Otherwise if we're living a sinful life and we just come before God occasionally and mention Christ's name… No, we have to striving to obey God the Father an Jesus Christ and keeping His commandments and loving Him!
Verse 16: "And I will ask the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that it may be with you throughout the age." Pentecost is coming up and that's the Comforter that He sent!
Verse 17: "Even the Spirit of the Truth, which the world cannot receive because it perceives it not, nor knows it, but you know it because it dwells with you… [at that time it was with the apostles] …and shall be within you."
That's true with us. When God was calling us, His Spirit was with us, calling us. But after repentance and baptism and the laying on of hands, then we received the Holy Spirit to be with us, to give us the help to fight this carnal nature and all the things in the mind and what we put in there.
Verse 26: "But when the Comforter comes, even the Holy Spirit, which the Father will send in My name, that One shall teach you all things, and shall bring to your remembrance everything that I have told you."
John 15:16: You yourselves did not choose Me, but I have personally chosen you…"
For come reason God chose us, looked down and called us to repentance that then onto baptism and receive His Holy Spirit.
"…and ordained you…" (v 16). In this case the elders were ordained and put into this position as service to the brethren!
Not one as lordship to reign over, but to help and encourage the brethren, and to pray for them 'as you pray for us' as Paul said.
"…that you should go forth… [speaking to the apostles] …and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; so that whatever you shall ask the Father in My name… [the name of Christ] …He may give you" (vs 16-17).
John 16:23: "And in that day you shall ask Me nothing. Truly, truly I tell you, whatever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give you. Until this day, you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full" (vs 23-24)—asking the right way:
- keeping God's commandments
- wanting to love Him
- grow in grace and knowledge
1-John 3:21: "Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, then we have confidence toward God. And whatever we may ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and practice those things that are pleasing in His sight" (vs 21-22).
It's a way of life! We practice keeping God's ways, laws, commandments; walking in them, doing them and teaching them, as we can, to others. So, we need to have confidence when we come before God. We can have confidence if we're striving to keep His commandments, love Him and Jesus Christ.
Verse 23: "And this is His commandment: that we believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and thatwe love one another, exactly as He gave commandment to us. And the one who keeps His commandments is dwelling in Him, and He in him; and by this we know that He is dwelling in us: by the Spirit, which He has given to us" (vs 23-24).
1-John 5:13: "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God in order that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. And this is the confidence that we have toward Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we may ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of Him" (vs 13-15).
If we ask Him in faith and confidence—according to His will—then we can believe that God will intervene. God doesn't always intervene exactly in the time that we want Him to. Sometimes it might be days, months or even years before certain prayers are answered. But God does hear us, and that's something we have to understand and realize. God does hear us when we pray if we're asking in the right way, and striving to love Him and keep His commandments, and love your neighbor as yourself.
John 20:30: "Now then, Jesus did many other miracles in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book. But these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing, you may have life through His name" (vs 30-31).
We know that we have life through Jesus Christ, because He became flesh and became the Passover Lamb to give His life for all of mankind. That we can have access to eternal life through God the Father and through Jesus Christ our Passover and sacrificial Lamb. We must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that believing you may have life—eternal life—through His name!
Acts 2:22—Peter speaking: "Men, Israelites, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarean…"
Some of us are probably part of Israel, the 12 tribes, but we're spiritual Israelites, where God says that all nations come in, not just physical Israel. So, we can either be part of physical Israel, but it's spiritual Israel that we're talking about here.
"…a Man sent forth to you by God, as demonstrated by works of power and wonders and signs, which God performed by Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know; Him, having been delivered up by the predetermined plan…." (vs 22-23).
It was a predetermined plan that Christ would die as our sacrifice!
"…and foreknowledge of God, you have seized by lawless hands and have crucified and killed. But God has raised Him up, having loosed the throes of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it" (vs 23-24).
The promise was that Christ would rise again in three days, and He did—three days and three nights—just as He told the prophecy about Jonah. He said that the Son of man will be put into the heart of the earth. God raised Him back up, otherwise we could have not opportunity for eternal life or forgiveness of sin.
Verse 21: "And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
You may have seen some of the commercials that Franklin Graham pops up on, and he says, 'I know we live in terrifying times and if you're afraid just accept Jesus Christ and pray this prayer and you're be saved.' Then he ends it by saying, 'Pray it in the name of Jesus Christ,' which I was surprised and happy to hear that.
We need to call upon the name of Christ in the right way, as we've already talked about, then God will hear us, and we can believe that!
Acts 3:2: "And a certain man who was lame from his mother's womb was being carried, whom they placed daily at the temple door, which is called Beautiful, to beg alms from those who were going into the temple. When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. But Peter and John, intently observing him, said, 'Look on us.' And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, 'Silver and gold I do not have; but what I do have, this I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarean, rise up and walk'" (vs 2-6).
What a blessed thing that that was. Here was a man who had been lame from his mother's womb, and to be able to rise up and walk was worth more than the gold and silver that could be had.
We see the mercy of Jesus Christ there and also they were able to speak to the name of Christ and this man was healed, as many others were throughout the Gospels.
Mark 1:21: "Then they went into Capernaum. And on the Sabbaths, after going into the synagogue, He straightway taught the people. And they were astonished at His doctrine; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Now, in their synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit; and it cried out, saying, 'Ah! What have we to do with You, Jesus, the Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know Who You are—the Holy One of God!'" (vs 21-24).
Verse 25: "But Jesus rebuked it, saying, 'Be silent, and come out of him.' And after throwing him into convulsions and crying out with a loud voice, the spirit came out of him. Then all were astonished, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, 'What is this? What new teaching is this, that with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him?'" (vs 25-27).
They knew Who He was, the very Son of God Who became flesh and was called Jesus the Christ! And through that great power and His name the demons were cast out.
Luke 10:17: "Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, 'Lord, even the demons are subject to us through Your name.' And He said to them, 'I was watching when Satan fell from heaven like lightning"" (vs 17-18).
This is from Ezekiel and Isaiah where Satan tried to overthrow God and he was cast back down, and Christ said that He was there and beheld him as lightning fall from heaven.
Verse 19: "Behold, I give you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall injure you in any way."
So, the 70 returned with great joy and even demons were cast out when they mentioned the name of Jesus Christ. We know that others were able to do this, as well. The seven sons of Sceva (Acts 19) thought they would take on the power and try to cast out some demons, but the demons said, 'Christ I know and Paul I know, but who are you?' and they jumped on the seven sons and they went out with their clothes torn off and everything else. They didn't have the power and authority from Christ to do that.
Many people today and in times past have done the same thing. They think they can do things in the power of Christ, when actually they're not serving Christ or keeping His laws and commandments. This is a good example of what can happen to them.
Acts 4:8: "Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, 'Rulers of the people and elders of Israel, if we are examined this day as to a good work done to the infirm man, by what power he has been cured, it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarean, Whom you crucified, but Whom God has raised from the dead, by Him this man stands before you whole'" (vs 8-10).
Verse 12: "And there is no salvation in any other, for neither is there another name under heaven, which has been given among men, by which we must be saved.'"
Verse 16: "Saying, 'What shall we do to these men? For a remarkable miracle has indeed come to pass through them and is manifest to all those living in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it"—this miracle that's been done by them through the name of Jesus Christ!
Verse 17: "'But that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them with a severe threat not to speak any more to anyone in this name.' And after summoning them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, 'Whether it is right before God to listen to you rather than to God, you judge" (vs 17-19).
Acts 5:28: "Saying, 'Did we not order you by a direct command not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, with the purpose of bringing this man's blood upon us.' But Peter and the apostles answered and said, 'We are obligated to obey God rather than men" (vs 28-29).
That's true for us today. When it becomes a conflict against God and His Word, we are to obey God rather than man, regardless of what circumstances may come upon us.
Verse 30: "The God of our fathers raised up Jesus Whom you killed by hanging Him on a tree. Him has God exalted by His right hand to be a Prince and Savior, to give repentance and remission of sins to Israel. And we are His witnesses of these things, as is also the Holy Spirit, which God has given to those who obey Him" (vs 30-32)—whom the Holy Spirit is given to!
Verse 33: "Now, when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and took counsel to put them to death." God intervenes here, and uses the wisdom of this man:
Verse 34: "But a certain man stood up, a Pharisee in the Sanhedrin, Gamaliel by name…"
Paul said that he was taught at the feet of Gamaliel; he was a very respected man and very knowledgeable in the Law of God
"…a teacher of the law who was honored by all the people, and commanded that the apostles be put out for a short while. And he said to them, 'Men, Israelites, give careful thought to what you are about to do concerning these men'" (vs 34-35).
Think about it! Think about what you're about to do!
Verse 36: "For before these days there rose up Theudas, proclaiming that he himself was somebody, to whom a number of men were joined, about four hundred; but he was put to death, and all those who had been persuaded by him were dispersed and came to nothing. After this one, in the days of the registration, Judas the Galilean rose up and drew away many people after him; but he perished, and all who had been persuaded by him were scattered. And now I say to you, withdraw from these men, and let them alone; for if this counsel or this work be from men, it will be overthrown… [it would be dispersed and amount to nothing] …but if it be from God, you do not have the power to overthrow it. Take heed, lest you be found to be fighting even against God'" (vs 36-39). You don't have the power to overthrow it!
Verse 40: "And they were persuaded by him; and they called in the apostles and, after beating them…"
'So, we have to do something to them, they just can't get by with saying this and accusing us.'
"…commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus; and they released them. Then they departed from the presence of the Sanhedrin, rejoicing that they were accounted worthy to suffer shame for His name…. [Jesus Christ] …And every day, in the temple and in the houses, they did not cease teaching and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ" (vs 40-42).
They were in the temple and open where people could see them preaching and teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Acts 2:37: Now, after hearing this, they were cut to the heart; and they said to Peter and the other apostles, 'Men and brethren, what shall we do?' Then Peter said to them, 'Repent and be baptized each one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you yourselves shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit'" (vs 37-38).
We're told here that in order to receive the Holy Spirit, we must repent and be baptized.
There was something that came up several years ago. There was a minister that I liked and respected, but he thought that you should baptize only in the name of Jesus Christ. He apologized and said to some woman that he had baptized and he didn't baptize her in the name of Jesus Christ only. In Matt. 28 we have specific instructions from Christ Himself telling the apostles what they should do.
Matthew 28:18: "And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore, go and make disciples in all nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (vs 18-19)—which we ask God to send upon repentance and baptism.
At the end of the prayer when we are baptizing someone, we say, 'We do this by and through the authority of the name of Jesus Christ, and you have been forgiven of all your sins.'
There may be a little bit longer versions of that that are said. I usually use the shorter version that puts all of that in there.
We see that it is kind of confusing, because there are certain Scriptures that say baptize in the name of Jesus; but Jesus here in Matt. 28 is giving us the command to His apostles and we do recognize the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, which is the power that God gives us to overcome.
Acts 4:12: "And there is no salvation in any other, for neither is there another name under heaven which has been given among men, by which we must be saved."
It has to be in the name of and by the authority of Jesus Christ our Savior.
Acts 19:3: "Then he said to them, 'Unto what then were you baptized?'…. [these were disciples of John] …And they said, 'Unto the baptism of John.' And Paul said, 'John truly baptized with a baptism unto repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in Him Who was coming after him—that is, in Jesus, the Christ.' And after hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus" (vs 3-5).
They had only been baptized in the name of John.
Acts 8:12: "But when they believed Philip…"—because he had been sent to Samaria and there were sorcerers there! Simon Magus was there and had everybody confused and fooled by his sorcery and witchcraft.
"…who was preaching the Gospel—the things concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ—they were baptized, both men and women" (v 12).
Acts 9:28: "And he [Paul] was with them, coming in and going out in Jerusalem, and speaking boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus."
Paul had been preaching against Christ, and he was a very staunch Pharisee and he thought that they (Jesus and the disciples) were trying to destroy their religion. Once Paul was knocked down, Christ said that Paul would 'suffer many things for My namesake, but he's a vessel in My hand to be used mightily.
We see in v 27: "Then Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles, and related to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus."
Acts 10:38: "Concerning Jesus, Who was from Nazareth: how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with Him. And we are witnesses of all the things that He did, both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed Him by hanging Him on a tree. But God raised Him up the third day, and showed Him openly" (vs 38-40
God resurrected Jesus just as He said He would! It was for the remission of sins that He gave His life for us.
Verse 1: "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, called by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, to the Church of God that is in Corinth, the called saints who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, together with all those in every place who are calling on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours" (vs 1-2).
Christ is Lord and Savior of all when they are called and come into the knowledge, being willing to accept and be baptized. So, God is not just the God of us; He is the God of all creation. He wants all men and women to be saved and come to repentance and strive to overcome sin through the power of His Holy Spirit.
1-Corinthians 1:10: "Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; rather, that you be knit together in the same mind and in the same judgment."
Knitted together like a garment; close together, doing the same things and exhorting one another in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and respecting Him.
Ephesians 5:20: "Giving thanks at all times for all things to God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."
Philippians 2:5: "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."
What was His mind? To do the will of the Father! He lived upon the earth in the flesh without sin. He did not allow Satan to tempt Him, test Him and fall. He said to Satan, 'Get behind Me, and you serve God and Him only.'
We are to have that same mind, being loyal and faithful to God, keeping the things in our mind. How wonderful it would be if we could remember Scriptures. I'm not able to remember them very well. Some I used to know have kind of gone by the wayside.
But all the evil is still there! The sins and things that are still in our minds, but we have to control them by and through God's Holy Spirit. That's the only way we can, and thankfully those who do have God's Holy Spirit help us to fight those things. God hasn't left us orphans just by ourselves.
Verse 5: "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus; Who, although He existed in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God" (vs 5-6).
When we have that great opportunity some day through Jesus Christ to be gods, sons of God, not because of the greatness or anything on our part. God calls the weak of the world to confound the wise (1-Cor. 1:27-28[transcriber's correction]). God has called us to be sons of God, not that we will be equal with God the Father and Jesus Christ, but we'll be constantly growing as His sons and daughters in His Kingdom.
Verse 7: "But emptied Himself, and was made in the likeness of men, and took the form of a servant; and being found in the manner of man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Therefore, God has also highly exalted Him…. [He is at the right hand of God forevermore making intercession for us] …and bestowed upon Him a name, which is above every name" (vs 7-9).
There is no name that going to be above the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Verse 10: "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow took the form of a servant, of beings in heaven and on earth and under the earth."
There's coming a time when all knees will bow, recognize and admit that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of the world.
Verse 11: "And every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father."
Colossians 3:17: "And in everything—whatever you do in word or in deed—do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him."
Heb. talks a lot about Christ becoming our High Priest; I won't be going into that.
Hebrews 13:12: "For this reason, Jesus, in order that He might sanctify the people by His own blood, also suffered outside the gate. So then, let us go forward to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach. For we do not have a continuing city here on earth; rather, we are seeking the one that is coming" (vs 12-14)—as Abraham said! He was looking for a city built by God! That's what we're looking for!
Verse 15: "Accordingly, let us offer the sacrifice of praise continually to God through Him [Jesus Christ]; that is, with the fruit of our lips openly professing our faith in His name."
We are to give thanks to God continually for all the things that does, has done and doing, and also through His Son Jesus Christ, Who sits at His right hand, and makes intercession for us on a daily basis; 24 hours that we can come before God any time day or night and call upon Him in the name of Jesus Christ.
If we're striving to obey God and keep His commandments, love Him and one another God hears our prayers. He will answer in time.
We will see that from birth Christ's name was to be called Jesus.
Luke 1:30: "Then the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, because you have found grace with God."
What a special young woman this must have been, that God would choose her to give birth to His only Begotten Son.
Verse 31: "And behold, you shall conceive in your womb and give birth to a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus."
Just like it was foretold what John the Baptist's name would be before he was born.
Matthew 1:18: "…His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph…"
God intervened and told Joseph to go ahead and take Mary to be his wife, v 20: "…'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife, because that which has been begotten in her is of the Holy Spirit.'"
Joseph believed God and didn't question God; he believed that that was true.
Verse 22: "Now, all this came to pass that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, 'Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall give birth to a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel,' which is being interpreted, 'God with us.'" (vs 22-23). Tie in Isa. 14 that foretells that!
Verse 24: "And when Joseph was awakened from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded, and took his wife to wed; but he did not have sexual relations with her until after she had given birth to her Son, the firstborn; and he called His name Jesus" (vs 24-25).
I would like to recap the things that we went through and covered:
John 14:6: ""Jesus said to him, 'I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.'"
Verse 13: "And whatever you shall ask in My name, this will I do that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. If you love Me, keep the commandments—namely, My commandments" (vs 13-15)—if we want Him to hear our prayers!
1-John 5:14: "And this is the confidence that we have toward Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we may ask…"
John 20:31: "…you may have life through His name."
Acts 4:12: "And there is no salvation in any other, for neither is there another name under heaven which has been given among men, by which we must be saved."
Verse 30: "By reaching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your Holy Son Jesus."
By His stripes we are healed when we come before God to be anointed or ask for anointing cloths. It's through His stripes that we can be healed, and His sacrifice.
Acts 2:38—we must be called to repentance: "…'Repent and be baptized each one of you in the name of Jesus Christ…'"—and also recognize God the Father and the Holy Spirit!
Acts 10:43: "…everyone who believes in Him receives remission of sins through His name."
1-Corinthians 1:2: "To the Church of God that is in Corinth, the called saints who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, together with all those in every place who are calling on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
Philippians 2:10: "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow…"
Luke 1 & Matt. 1—His name was to be called Jesus before He was born.
When we pray we should do it in the name and by the authority of Jesus Christ, not as the world does who wants to be politically correct and just say 'in his name we pray' opening up to satisfy all religions of the world.
